Readers Digest PB-2
The Reader's Digest PB-2 is a very rare 3-piece boombox from the 1980's. It's a restyled version (AKA) of the GE 3-5267A, the Eaton Viking SPC-7499, and the TEC Sound 4050. It has big VU meters, Dolby, Matrix (wide stereo effect), and nice knobs with the proper amount of resistance. On the back, it has a 120/220V voltage selector, as well as a switch that allows you to recharge some Nickel Cadmium batteries.
It was made in Taiwan and measures 22" X 10 1/4" X 6 1/2". It has 2-way speakers with 12cm woofers labelled "9 watts max", with rolled-edge surrounds made of either foam or cloth. It also has 5cm tweeters which are labelled "6 watts". And finally, there are two bass ports surrounding each tweeter.
Sound quality is OK. The tweeters are very good. In fact, you have to turn down the treble because the tweeters are so strong. But the bass is weak. It does move a lot of air through the bass ports, but the bass doesn't go deep at all. It sounds like mostly mid-bass, coupled with resonance from the thin plastic walls. You should definitely add some Dynamat or Rockmat to stiffen the walls and deepen the bass. The amp chip (Panasonic AN7166) makes 5-6 watts per channel according to Google.
